3x!13 (USA)

3x!13 (pronounce as "Exile") is the creative alias of prolific Charlotte-based musician Frank Wee. He owns 13 guitars, which he uses to create his personal blend of electro-acoustic music; among other styles, he's tagged on his Last.FM userpage as apocalypse pop, cyberpop, digipop, indietronic, post-rock and trip-hop. His music is intensely personal, moody and so very, very diverse.

He released a free double album, "A Summer Spent Inside", through eclectic-in-a-good-way netlabel PostUnder. It's been a personal favorite of mine for about four years now; I especially enjoy listening to it during sunrise after a night of intense introspection. I only found out several months ago that he's been steadily releasing both new material as well as his back catalogue: there were 12 releases waiting for me, with more on the way!

In addition to the album downloads below, you can get his latest unreleased tracks through his SoundCloud and his ReverbNation pages. In 2009, 3x!13 took to the stage for the first time; I've embedded a video from one of his live shows below:

If you like your music varied, personal, lo-fi and completely unpretentious, with lyrics that really touch your soul, definitely give 3x!13 a listen. I recommend starting with "A Summer Spent Inside" to get a good idea of his sonic versatility. To give you an inkling of the capital-Q Quality of the material he puts out: the album been reviews by eight people, and ALL of them rated it five stars. Check out 3x!13, and get sucked into his world. It's a beautiful place to be; no other artist tickles my brain like he does.

You can download SXB10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 18 from 3x!13's Last.FM page, but only as separate MP3 files. Because these files aren't numbered, they'll play out of order unless you rename them first. To save you the effort of downloading the individual tracks and renaming them, I've taken the liberty of adding the track numbers to the files, adding them to .rar archives and uploading them to my Mediafire.com account.

I just noticed that some of the tracks are at 32kpb. Erm...are they available in at least 192 kbp?

    Thanks for the posts though!

Some tracks have minor errors in them, not in the sound but the metadata shows incorrect bitrate/song length. The 32kbps tracks you're seeing (which ones?) are probably VBR. Thanks for your comment!

And alas, most tracks are 128kbps only... guess 3x!13 takes the lo-fi aesthetic seriously.

I looked through the albums again and I see that they are all indeed 128 kbp +. I was probably tired and looking at the file size or something stupid like that. Sorry about that.

By the way: 1. do you get some of your music suggestions from Sordo music? I've seen a few albums here that were also presented on sordo (or maybe you're the uploader there!).

    2. How often is this blog updated?

Anyway, again, thanks for all the links :D

Hey Steven, thanks for posting! I uploaded these albums and some other ones myself; I also have a 3x!13 playlist of tracks that I uploaded to youtube (user: ROTTERDXM).

Updates happen sporadically; I try to bring lots of new/rare stuff whenever I do post. You can subscribe to the RSS feed or find new uploads on Sordo. That will save you some effort :)
